Björt Rùnars (Björt Rúnarsdóttir) is an icelandic cellist and soundscaper based in Barcelona.
With roots in the classical world in her music she explores the bounderies of her instrument.
On the barrier of acoustic and electronic sound, on the edge of analog organic, digital and synthetic.
Her music atmospheric, melancholic and elegant, yet intense and passionate an exploration of delicate textures.
-In her music she generally plays with the sound and texture of her cello processing its natural sound with pedals and effects, making webs of music looping and often adding pre-recorded rythms and field-recordings and other material as her voice, keyboards and other instruments.
Björt Rùnars-Björt Rúnarsdóttir
Is an Icelandic cellist and soundscaper based in Barcelona but born and raised in her hometown Reykjavík. She received her education in the classical world, but alongside her classical studies she has always explored alternative paths within the experimental world firmly developing her own language.
In her music, atmospheric and subtle but at the same time intense, she generally plays with the sound and texture of her cello, processing, its natural sound with pedals and effects, making fine layered webs of sounds to which she blends in other sonic material as her voice, field recordings, percussive elements, keyboards and other instruments building up delicate but intense sonic realms.
At the end of 2022 she released her first solo album “Tiktúra”.
In addition to making her own music she currently and in the past has participated and collaborated in numerous projects of different styles and forms:
electro-acoustic, film and audio-visual-works, improvisation, experimental music, dance and theatre productions and music for visual media. And with these projects performed in Europe (Spain, France, England, Germany, Denmark, Bulgaria etc), China, Tunisia, Korea, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, etc., in festivals like Sónar, LEV, Eufònic, Sharja Light Festival, Hi Seoul, Festuge, Odin Teatrets Festuge, Melbourne International Arts Festival, etc.
Currently she is working in various fields with different projects:
Highlighted are the long collaboration with the French company of fire installations Cie Carabosse, with whom she has been playing her music for their poetic and spectacular fire around the world as well as their new Performance-Installation “D´Arbre en Arbre” premiered in 2023, for which she wrote and performs the music live.
And the audiovisual project "A Taste of Nature" with the Spanish visual artist Alba G. Corral , consisting of live performed visuals integrating real-time coding and drawing in connection with the live performed music, an ongoing project in continuous development since 2014.
Among other highlighted current projects is the duo with the Japanese Ondes Martenot player Tomomi Kubo formed in 2024, in 2025 they released their first album together “Utopirica”.
The project ”Varosha" with the Catalan poet Mireia Calafell uniting strong poetry with electronic cello and other organic and electronic material, “Ser cuerpo” and other sculptural performances and actions with the sculptor Joaquín Jara, collaborations in many forms over the years with the French musician izOReL and the long lasting collaboration with the musician and composer Miguel Marín (Arbol).
And a new project is emerging with the accordionist and electronic music producer Edurne Arizu, very soon to be premiered!

Es una cellista y soundscaper islandesa afincada en Barcelona. Se formó en el mundo clásico en su ciudad natal Reykjavík, pero a la vez de esa formación, siempre exploró caminos alternativos paralelamente y en su búsqueda desarrolló con firmeza un lenguaje propio.
En su música, atmosférica y sutil pero a la vez intensa, juega con el sonido y textura de su cello, procesando su sonido natural con pedales y efectos, creando delicadas capas sonoras a las que introduce otros materiales sonoros como su voz, grabaciones de campo, elementos percusivos, teclados y otros instrumentos, creando esferas sonoras delicadas y intensas.
A finales de 2022 publicó su primer álbum en solitario, «Tiktúra».
Además de crear su propia música, actualmente y en el pasado ha participado y colaborado en numerosos proyectos de diferentes estilos y formatos: electroacústica, cine y obras audiovisuales, improvisación, música experimental, producciones de danza y teatro, y música para medios visuales. Y actuado con estos proyectos en Europa (España, Francia, Inglaterra, Alemania, Dinamarca, Bulgaria, etc.), China, Túnez, Corea, Australia, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, etc., en festivales como Sónar, LEV, Eufònic, Sharja Light Festival, Hi Seoul, Festuge, Odin Teatrets Festuge, Melbourne International Arts Festival, etc.
Actualmente presenta su trabajo en diversos campos con diferentes proyectos: Destaca su larga colaboración con la compañía francesa, Cie Carabosse, con la que ha interpretado su música por todo el mundo para las poéticas y espectaculares llamas de esta compañía de instalaciones de fuego, así como para su nueva performance-instalación «D'Arbre en Arbre», estrenada en 2023, para la cual compuso e interpreta la música en directo.
También destaca el proyecto audiovisual «A Taste of Nature» con la artista visual Alba G. Corral, que consiste en visuales realizados en vivo que integran codificación y elaboración en tiempo real en conexión con la música interpretada en vivo, un proyecto que han ido desarrollando desde 2014.
Entre otros proyectos actuales destacados se encuentra el dúo con la Ondista (Ondes Martenot) japonesa, Tomomi Kubo, formado en 2024. En 2025 lanzaron su primer álbum juntas, «Utopirica». También destacan «Varosha», un proyecto con la poeta catalana Mireia Calafell que fusiona poesía contundente con cello eléctrico y materiales orgánicos y electrónicos; «Ser cuerpo» y otras performances y acciones escultóricas con el escultor Joaquín Jara; colaboraciones en diversas formas a lo largo de los años con el músico francés izOReL; y la larga y duradera colaboración con el músico y compositor Miguel Marín (Arbol).
